Residents of Quara Woreda in West Gondar Zone said that access to solar electricity has saved them from harassment and unnecessary expenses.
Bahir Dar: June 30, 2014 (AMICO) Residents of Banbaho Kebele in Quara Woreda of West Gondar Zone have been requesting for access to electricity for many years.
Mr. Ennaw Serawu and Mr. Gebre Anteneh are residents of Banbaho Kebele in Quara Woreda. He said the lack of electricity was not only a problem for the youth but also a hindrance to the employment of the youth.
The young woman, who is engaged in the service sector, explained that she was exposed to high costs by paying 3,000 birr a month to a generator when there was no electricity.
Today, the residents of the kebele have access to solar services. Their use of energy has saved them from the abuse and unnecessary costs they have suffered in the past.
Residents called on the government to ensure that the solar project is not only monitored but also monitored.
The construction of the solar project was started in 2010 but due to various reasons, the community has not been able to use electricity for a long time.
The solar project will generate 277 kilowatts of electricity, he said, adding that 188 meters and four transformers have been made available to the kebele community.
Quara Woreda Chief Administrator, Yirdaw Kassahun said the solar project was constructed at a cost of over 35 million birr by the state, the federal government and the World Bank.
He said the project will be able to serve more than 10,000 members of the society.
He said work is underway with stakeholders to make electricity accessible in rural kebeles of the woreda and ensure the economic benefits of the community.
According to the woreda's electricity office, out of the 171,000 people living in the woreda, 7,000 have access to electricity.
