 Prominent journalist and author Tesfaye Gebreab has died at the age of 53, his family has told the BBC.


Tesfaye Gebreab has been ill for months and died on Friday afternoon, December 15, 2014, after receiving medical treatment in the Kenyan capital.


Tesfaye, best known for his literary works, was born on August 22, 1960, in Bischofswerda, 40 kilometers east of Addis Ababa to his Eritrean family.


His family originated in Eritrea and came to the interior of Eritrea, where they lived for years and had children.


Tesfaye says that he had a great love for literature and had been in contact with many prominent Ethiopian writers since he was a teenager.


Shortly after his recruitment and training by the military at the end of the Derg regime, the military government collapsed and he returned to Addis Ababa with the EPRDF to work as a journalist.

Tesfaye became the General Manager of the Ethiopian Press Agency, which publishes popular state-run daily newspapers, and is said to have undergone fundamental changes in his day-to-day management of the company.

After retiring from journalism, Tesfaye worked as a full-time writer for the rest of his life, publishing more than eight works.


The author, who has published more than eight works in Amharic, is best known for his long-running novel "Burqa Silence".


This novel has been criticized by many Amharic readers.


Since then, author Tesfaye has been known for writing personal notes, novels, short stories, and traditions.


He is widely regarded as one of the most prolific writers of Amharic literature.


As much as Tesfaye is praised for his literary talent, few people criticize his work.


Many criticize him for focusing on issues that could lead to conflict, especially among Ethiopian communities.


On the other hand, there are those who argue that the articles present hidden stories of oppression and that they reflect the reality of marginalized communities.

Tesfaye published five volumes in two consecutive years (1992-1993) entitled "Efta".

He is also known for publishing a series of books entitled "Mountain Shaking Generation" which tells the main story and struggle from the beginning of the TPLF struggle to the EPRDF's entry into Addis Ababa.


Tesfaye has been a prominent figure in the ruling EPRDF in the field of journalism and literature, and according to him, he fled Ethiopia due to disagreements with the country's leading politicians.


After leaving the country, he finished reading the much-talked-about books of the ruling party EPRDF and its officials, including "Journalist's Note" and "Author's Note".


Tesfaye Gebreab, admired by many for his outstanding writing skills; Russian authors have repeatedly claimed to have influenced Dostoevsky, Maxim Gorky, Pushkin, and Tolstoy.


After leaving Ethiopia, Tesfaye emigrated to various countries, where he spent his entire time working on literature and reading various books.


All of Tesfaye's works have been published in Amharic, some of which have been translated into English and Aromanian.
